The Secret to a Larger Campaign Goal

A few years ago, we received a call from a large university that needed help.

Their campaign had stalled, and they didn’t know how they were going to get close to their goal.

Their case for support was a beautiful document full of many options for investment. They couldn’t understand why so few gifts had come in, and why those that had were far below expectations.

Digging deeper, we learned that the university’s trustees and administration had set the campaign’s priorities by themselves. Alumni and constituents hadn’t been asked to weigh in, so the university had no way of knowing that their donors had no interest in funding them.

There was no buzz around the campaign because key alumni with social capital hadn’t been involved up front. Messaging was falling flat and was being driven only by advancement staff—not by donors’ peers.

The university was facing a crisis—a failed campaign.

Sadly, it was a crisis that could’ve easily been avoided.
